VIJAYAKUMARI'S STORY

Vijaya Kumari N. is a talented woman who enjoys embroidery and likes to sing. Born in Hullahalli, Karnataka, she managed to study till the eleventh grade, after which she moved to her sister’s house. Vijaya’s life had already been full of challenges as her father was an alcoholic and was not supporting her and her 5 siblings financially. Though she was enrolled in a course to be a lab technician she was forced to take employment to support her other siblings. She was a receptionist at a Hospital, but one unfortunate day she fell down the stairs of the hospital at which she worked. The fall broke her right leg and due to negligence turned gangrenous and had to be amputated below the knee. Permanently disabled, Vijaya could no longer work and lost her independence. Soon enough, she was seen as a burden to the sister and brother-in-law she was living with. As she realised how badly this change in her life was affecting her and those around her, she prayed for a place to live that could accept her with her disability.

To her good fortune, her prayers were answered. In 1998, Vijaya visited Anga Karuyana Kendra in search of a prosthetic leg. Recognising her difficulties, the organisation referred her to Cheshire Homes, Bangalore. The home took her in with open arms at a time when she felt there was no hope left for her.

This is what she has to say about her experience:

Cheshire Homes has given me all the help and assistance I needed as a disabled person, especially during my recent sickness. The home looked after me so well which I can never forget and thank them enough. Cheshire Homes made me understand that disability is not an inability and I am not alone, there are always people to support me in all my needs. At Cheshire Homes I feel that I am respected, I am wanted and I can do many things on my own with the help of people in the Home.”

Vijaya is now 56 and has been in the home for over 20 years. Cheshire Homes, Bangalore has given Vijaya, and many others like her, a space where people are valued, respected, and treated like adults. It has helped her and her family discover that disability is not the defining feature of a person’s life.
