STORIES: ROSLYN'S STORY
Roslyn is an articulate, confident young woman of 35 and joined Cheshire Homes in the year 1999 when she was barely 11 years old. She is the only child of her parents. When her mother died while she was still young, her father abandoned her as she was afflicted with polio from her waist down and he did not want to be burdened with taking care of her. The responsibility of bringing up Roslyn fell on her maternal grandmother and her uncle. Her uncle admitted her at Cheshire Homes, Bangalore where she has been staying for 23 years.
Cheshire Homes, Bangalore ensured that Roslyn got a good education. She was sent to the school run by the Association of People with Disabilities (APD) where she studied up to 7th standard. Then she joined The Seventh Day Adventist School (SDA) for her 8th standard and completed her schooling there. She managed to get a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (B.Com) through correspondence from Bangalore University. She is now employed with ANZ bank for several years and is very happy that she is financially independent.
Roslyn stays at Cheshire Homes Whitefield as it is convenient for her to commute to her workplace. Some of the senior residents of the home treat her like their own child and make efforts to care for her and pamper her.
“Cheshire Homes, Bangalore, India gave me a new life with happiness. I am very proud to say I am from Cheshire Homes and it has given me a good education and made me self-sufficient. Cheshire Homes taught me how to live a flexible life and humanity. Being in Cheshire Homes for 23 years is the best part of my life and I am blessed with an amazing circle of friends” says Roslyn. Roslyn is a member of AWA (an alumni of Cheshire Homes).
Roslyn has a sweet child-like voice and is talented in singing, craft, and drawing as well as has good handwriting. She is also multi-lingual with an ability to speak in Kannada, English, Tamil, Urdu, and sign language.
